The Club Sandwich: A History of This Lunch Food Classic

Americans have been enjoying club sandwiches for over a century. Typically featuring three slices of toasted white bread, the classic club sandwich includes turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. It’s a classic lunch food that you’ll find at restaurants everywhere, including Brickhouse Pizza North! If you’re in the mood for something traditional yet satisfying, you can’t go wrong with a club sandwich.

How much do you know about the origins of the club sandwich? Join us as we explore the start of this lunch food favorite!

Somewhere in New York…

We don’t know the exact origins of the club sandwich, but the two most credible stories both take place in New York in the late 1800s, one in the City and another in Saratoga Springs. The first story attributes the origins of the club sandwich to the Union Club in New York City, while the other claims it was at the Saratoga Club in Saratoga Springs. However, both agree that the sandwich was born in the restaurant of a private club, which is where it gets its name.

Regardless of its origins, the club sandwich quickly became popular at restaurants and clubs across the country. In the early 20th century, the club sandwich was a common choice for both lunch and light dinner.

Variations on the Club Sandwich

Club sandwiches remain popular, and chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on them over the years. At Brickhouse Pizza North, we have several club sandwiches on our menu. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • The BLT: It’s the classic BLT, made in the style of a club sandwich. Your BLT could always use another layer.
  • Roast Beef Club: If turkey is a little too light for your tastes, try a club sandwich with something more robust, like roast beef.
  • Chicken or Tuna Salad: While there’s nothing wrong with a basic chicken or tuna salad sandwich, making it a club takes it to another level. Putting the chicken or tuna salad between slices of toasted bread adds much-needed texture variation.
  • Ham & Cheese: Who doesn’t love a ham and cheese sandwich? Well, you’ll love it even more when it’s made in the style of a club sandwich.
